Notalgia Paraesthetica is an itchy skin condition of the central back usually involving the skin below the shoulder blades.
II. Causes:
- The nerves, which supply sensation to the upper back, are vulnerable to damage because of the course they take in this area making a 90-degree turn just before reaching the skin.
- If these cutaneous nerves become damaged, skin itching and altered sensation can occur.
III. Treatment: (there is no cure, usually control can be achieved)
- Capsaicin cream available from your local pharmacy without a prescription can help this problem but must be applied 4-5 times a day for several weeks before it works and then must be used continuously thereafter.
- Sarna lotion applied 2-3 times a day can help control the itching.
- Ela-Max Cream available at your local pharmacy can control the itching.
- Some patients improve with amitriptyline tablets when taken before bed. This medication requires a prescription.
