Pityriasis Lichenoides
I. Definition:
Pityriasis lichenoides is a rash with red or brown, raised, scaly patches that can form scars. The condition is not dangerous.
II. Causes:
· The cause is unknown.
· The disease is more common in males.
· Usually begins during the first thirty years of life but can start at any age.
III. Course:
· The rash can last for weeks to months. It usually disappears within one to two years.
IV. Treatment:
· Corticosteroid creams and ointments applied to the skin often control the rash and itching.
· Antihistamines such as Benadryl by mouth will help alleviate the itching.
· The disease can be controlled but not cured.
· Sometimes ultraviolet light treatment will improve pityriasis lichenoides.
